Protecting Mothers, Protecting Children. Joint Statement in Support of a Human-Rights Approach to Cross-Border Child Protection.
The health, safety and well-being of mothers and children cannot be treated as separate. Recognizing that connection must be central to how we approach violence prevention, child protection, family justice and cross-border child protection.
Alongside women’s organisations from across the world, we warmly welcome the landmark report ‘Violence against Mothers‘ by the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, Reem Alsalem. We call for its findings to inform the post-2030 agenda and for violence against mothers to be recognized as a critical issue at the intersection of women’s rights, children’s rights, health, safety and human rights.
Courts, migration systems and cross-border child-protection mechanisms must be grounded in human rights, gender equality and the best interests of the child.
Protecting mothers is essential to protecting children.
